Tradition Never Graduates" - Building a Championship Vision Culture I want to share with you my #2 Book in my Program Builder Series called "Tradition Never Graduates- Building a Championship Vision Culture": The book will be out very soon, but I want to share with you some excerpts from the book that I hope you like and can use with your program. Introduction — Why Culture WinsChampionships aren’t built on talent alone. They are forged in the quiet moments — when no one is watching, when the gym is empty, and when habits and standards are being set. Winning programs know that vision and culture drive success long before talent catches up. This book is for coaches and sports leaders who want to build something that lasts. It’s about creating a Championship Vision Culture — a clearly defined philosophy, shared standards, and an identity that athletes and families rally around year after year. The Empty Gym Moment Mission & Core Philosophy
Story — Big Time in a Small GymWhen I first took over a struggling girls’ basketball program, the gym was half empty on game nights. We didn’t have fancy gear, a big budget, or a waiting list of talent. Some coaches might have seen it as a stepping stone — a place to survive until something “bigger” came along. But I decided this would be the big time for the kids who walked through those doors every day. The first summer, we painted the locker room ourselves. Parents helped hang banners and motivational signs. We created a team standards board and a Row the Boat oar, even though we didn’t have the money for expensive branding. I started a simple “Breakfast Club” — early-morning shooting and skill work — with nothing more than borrowed basketballs and a few donuts for the girls who showed up. At first, only a handful came. But word spread: something is happening here. The next year, the group doubled. Younger players started showing up to watch our varsity girls train. Elementary school kids wore our shirts to class. We invited local youth teams to play at halftime and built a feeder day that made them feel like stars. We didn’t win a state title that year. But we built pride. We built habits. And soon, recruits didn’t have to dream of playing somewhere else — they wanted to be Lady Rebels because this was big time. The truth is, “big time” isn’t about the size of your gym, the brand on your shoes, or how many banners hang from the rafters. It’s about the standard you set, the investment you make, and the belief you create that right here is special. When your players walk into the gym and feel like they’re part of something meaningful, you’ve made the big time — no matter where you are.
