Chapter 1 Samples:

Make Practice Fun

What teachers or coaches when you were growing up, epitomize being a master teacher or coach? “Well, through the years growing up, my high school coaches, I had three primary coaches in high school for baseball and basketball. My basketball and baseball coach made everything fun. He was a strict disciplinarian, but it made everything fun. So, when you came to practice, there were contests, there were things going on. There was always action. There's always action, there's always purpose to what he was doing. But the main thing is, he was a complete character. And he recently passed away two or three years ago, and his name was John DeVos. And I patterned some of my behavior after John in terms of PE teaching and coaching”.

Purposeful Practice

Doc stated that he learned how to conduct purposeful practices through his Coach Bob Milano: “I get excited. I'm funny. I want to make things when they come to practice, they're going to come to practice and be engaged and be entertained in that regard. And I sometimes refer to myself as the Bob Barker of basketball coaches where they come and they'll, you know, it's total entertainment, total fun. Bob Milano, who was my high school varsity baseball coach. went on to coach at Cal Berkeley and he has made it in the college baseball hall of fame and everything he did was purposeful in practice. So, everybody knows everything about baseball is such to where it's a boring sport. Boring in terms of, you know, not a lot of action, but his practices were like an orchestrated circus to where if I pitched and for every minute of those two hours I was engaged, I was doing purposeful things.”

Doc went on to talk about specific things they did in his practices: “I was bunting, I was working on my stretch, I was doing a foul line to foul line, that wasn't fun. I was hitting ground balls to infielders; we were working on situations. So, everything that we did was purposeful, meaningful, and something that really struck me as how can baseball be so much fun for two hours because you're always engaged? And I took his system and made it very eclectic, and all of our practices are that way that they are purposeful, they are fun and they are meaningful.”

Here is an excerpt from Chapter 2 of this great interview:

Chapter 2: Creating an Environment that Advances Player Learning

Well, it's all about, well, part of it was his experience with his high school coaches. He had a baseball coach that wanted you to get better and gave individual things for you to do for you to get better. My high school basketball coach, it was all about tactics. It wasn't about individual skill. If you wanted individual skill back in my generation, you went to Squaw Valley. You went to different camps to learn individual skills. And I had a thirst for that. Doc would spend millions and hours out in his driveway working imitating Jerry West and Hondo Havlicek doing all these things.

He said” I would have loved to have a coach that would teach me those individual things. And that was the motivation for me to start my little individual business that I started in 1986, where now everybody and their mother and father teaches basketball lessons and training, things like that. But I just wanted to have an environment that I would love if I was that player. And that environment involves lots of action, lots of shooting, lots of skill work.”
